- Finally, a book designed with a format that makes the most sense for those of us who hunt for mushrooms in the wild - organized by SEASONS. Spring mushroom are grouped together, and so forth. Why hasn't anyone thought of this before? It really helps narrow things down and is one more aid to help the non-scientist with mushroom identification. But wait, there's more.............! The author injects a bit of dry wit into his writings, which add greatly to the readability of this field guide. Technical terms are concisely explained with clear, easy to understand layman's language. I own over a dozen mushroom books and this one stands above all the others as the most efficient to use. It does not contain everything - just mushrooms of the mid-Atlantic states. Oh how I wish there was a companion volume for mushrooms of the southeast. The book is compact enough to throw in your day pack, unlike so many others that are much to large to use in the field. A superb field guide - no one collecting mushrooms in the mid-Atlantic states and PA should be without it.
- Great mushroom book that has some good information. I find it small enough that it would be OK to carry in the woods, but it is a bit long. The book has good content, but could use a bit more information in some areas. I find this a great accompaniment to other mushroom books. As with all mushroom hunting it's best to have multiple sources to look at and consult. It's a great book and makes a good tool in the collection.
- Good book to take on mushroom hunts. Lots of mushrooms (125!) all very well documented and photographed. It is good that the main organization of the book is by season. But many mushrooms did not read the book and are around outside of their allotted chapter. A cross reference to aid identification and navigation would be very helpful.
- Very detailed and the pictures are very clear that you can identify what you are looking at.
- Great informative guide for mushrooms in Pennsylvania. Nice photos and great text. Author knows his mushrooms
- I find that just as with bird identification different sources compliment each other
- Sooo interesting
- Great book my daughter loves to identify species
