Recording engineers and producers, she finds, influenced technological and musical change as they sought to improve the sound of records. By investigating the complex relationship between sound engineering and popular music, she reveals the increasing reliance on technological intervention in the creation as well as in the reception of music. The recording studio, she argues, is at the center of musical culture in the twentieth century.

- This books covers the technological advances of recording in the modern era from Edison to CDs and it is very engaging. I highly recommend it as an addition to the conversation on the historic perspective of the way recording has evolved. Susan Schmidt Horning places this perspective into the context of the day. Woke me up to several things I didn't know. I don't want to go into it all now but I can say it well written and seemingly well researched. There is so much information that is it blessing that the author includes a conclusion/summary at the end of each chapter. This book really helps me out personally because I am currently delving into aspects of music technology as a new career, and I believe it is incumbent upon any music professional to know the history of the industry. Besides all that rigmarole, it is a really good read. The only thing I would probably wish was included were more song references that we could use as examples, and perhaps a little more detail about the particular equipment used. There is some of that but I am really interested in the gear. Anyway, I highly recommend it. It's very interesting to hear from all the engineers and producers and some artists of various eras and how the had to deal with the constraints of the day and how that drove innovation.

- This is the definitive book on sound studies applied to industry practices. It is elegantly written, smartly argued, and thoroughly researched. Any future attempt to chart the history of recording technology will have to begin where Horning left off.
- There is so much great information in this well-researched book, especially about the largely undocumented early period of recording, 1900-1950. Afer reading this book I feel I have a much more complete understanding of the complete history of recording and recording studios. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone with a deep interest in recording technology and the evolving role of engineers, producers, and technicians. It's a real antidote to the autobiographical books that seem to be overabundant these days, you know the type, "I met X at a club and we recorded this, and then I met Y and we recorded this, ad nauseum. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

- I’m a teacher and i bought these for my classroom. My 2nd grade students absolutely LOVE these books. They are never on the shelf. They are written in a comic book style- photos with short phrases and quotes that tell the story. It’s the classic bad guys who are horrible at being bad guys type of book. I also love that even my lower readers can still get meaning from the photos and my higher readers can catch the sarcasm and deeper level jokes and understandings so these span many ages!
- My son really struggles with reading and, thus, it’s hard to find any book that he’ll willingly sit down with. This series has been a total game changer! He LOVES IT... and so, so do we! He’s read them all multiple times, brings them to school to share with his friends, and is always so thrilled to preorder the next one. Very funny series, well written and hilariously drawn, perfect for a 2nd/3rd-grader’s mentality!!

You can't get away with just some jokes and the idea of superheroes.
- My son LOVES this series!!! He has been reading them since he was in 1st grade, at age 6, and still laughs his bottom off as he's reading them in 3rd grade, 8 years old. I think they are basic and it takes me about 2 minutes to read them, but they aren't for me, they are for kids, who seem to really love them.
- Like the previous books in the series, there is some potty language, but my 7 year old got this for his birthday and I think it was the gift he was most excited about. He’s read it several times and laughs out loud every single time. I love that this series has inspired him to read!
- My 9 year old son absolutely loves this series and we order the next one as soon as it’s available. Lots of pictures and an easy read for elementary school kids. We read these a lot for bed time stories and I enjoy them with him as well.
- My first grader read the entire thing in one sitting. Then he wanted me to read it with him a second time (same day). Then he was reading it again this morning. Definitely seems a hit with the target audience.

- This book is a Godsend. Thank you, Lisa Taylor, for writing this book, and for offering so many more helpful books, podcasts, and help groups specifically for women in our situation! Before knowing the label of my husband's problem, I didn't know how to go about searching for help books, and read SO many books that helped me very little. But this was a WEALTH of PERTINENT knowledge, each chapter provided endnotes for further research. Reading the book, I finally felt validated and understood, not alone. The author also does the research for the betrayed spouse, so that she does not end up reading books that make her feel worse, blaming her for her husband's addiction, or chastising her for her display of trauma.

- Great insights. I love the vulnerability of the author in this book. I also particularly loved the analogy she gave of the way many people treat a sex addict & their spouse.
In some circles, when a husband's sex addiction becomes known, it is as if he, driving drunk, has run over his wife. The onlookers gasp & everyone runs to the aid of the driver, while shushing the pedestrian for moaning or crying out in pain from their wounds.
I shared it with my husband. Sadly, it does often feel this way for some spouses of sex addicts. There is much more help available for the addict than the spouse, & even then, both areas of help can tend to be addict centric.
This book is refreshing because it does NOT follow the addict centric method.
I loved the Scripture references, some of which I had never applied quite the same to my situation.

- Prue Shaw's translation and commentary of Dante's 'Monarchy' combines a masterful grasp of her subject with an ability to convey her erudition clearly.

- Great price!
- This short but mind-numbing book deals with Church and Sate in Italy, political science in Italy's Medieval period, Italian politics and government in the 13th and 14th century, but chiefly deals with theoretical arguments of where the authority of the Church comes from. I originally read this in an older translation as On World Government, translated by Herbert W. Schneider (Library of Liberal Arts Press). This entirely new translation by Prue Shaw is far more complete and has the academic structure (extensive footnotes, lengthy introduction, citations of original sources given in separate tables, lengthy index, bibliographical references throughout text). Dante wanted an Emperor separate and independent of the Pope, and he spends many paragraphs in Book 3 of his treatise refuting the papal apologists. Dante was attempting to argue logically for an ordered political state that would sweep away the corruption, self-interest, avarice, and worldliness, that society had suffered in his time. He wanted to separate the temporal from the spiritual roles of the Church. He did want a Holy Roman Emperor who would be an absolute monarch with great power, but neutral from corruption, temptation, and would have focus. Dante wanted perfect justice.
However what he wanted was not then, nor ever was, achievable. Power in itself is corrupting. The book was banned soon after his death, because he refuted the papal apologists in great detail over several chapters in Book 3. The introduction by Prue Shaw goes into great detail into each section of the treatise. Shaw calls him a genius. I call him insane. Others have called hopelessly out of touch, hopelessly backward, hopelessly unrealistic. His historical determinism -- that all that happened in history is God's immortal plan is suspect and delusional. For that denies free will. I can readily imagine Thomas Paine burning this book, for it is anti-democratic in every way. I object especially to Book 2, where he tries to justify the ancient Roman Empire as foreordained by God, even though it was pagan, it did not rule the whole world (as Dante incorrectly asserts many times), and his account seems to deliberately contradict the history of Rome as told by St. Augustine in his City of God--which Dante did read. Also he quotes Aristotle a great deal, but Shaw suspect he never read Aristotle's Politics, only a summary written by someone else. Dante spends most of the treatise using Aristotle's method of logical proof, the syllogism, which makes for painful reading.
The Schneider translation had been assigned to a class on the history of Renaissance Florence, though it is clearly Medieval in outlook and time time written. On the whole, the book is a fantasy written to be perfectly logical. It is anti-democratic, based on fictitious or forged earlier texts -- the Donation of Constantine (of which Dante complains about) was a forgery. It is based on Virgil's Aeneid -- a fantasy -- and much of The Holy Bible -- much of that is also not true either. The only people who would want to read this are scholars fascinated with Medieval literature and Church politics of the late Medieval Period. Not recommended for the general reader. - All law is from God.
Just acts are judged by the criterion of conformance to the law of God.
Re-stating Aquinas, Dante affirms "The whole community of the universe is governed by Divine Reason."
Law has absolutely no relation or participation of influence with our modern "EKWALITEE". Law is inseparably interconnected with ORDER.
Dante clearly expounds law is anterior to human social and governmental existence. Sort of odd for a "reactionary totalitarian", yeah?
The Emperor of the ideal state is the prince of "officials", and Dante teaches the Emperor must dispassionately enforce the natural law and its claims against iniquity. The Emperor constrains feeble human nature and feebler creatures to observe the law as "RIDER OF THE HUMAN WILL."
