A rich and revelatory memoir of a young woman reclaiming her courage in the stark landscapes of the north.

By the time Blair Braverman was eighteen, she had left her home in California, moved to arctic Norway to learn to drive sled dogs, and found work as a tour guide on a glacier in Alaska. Determined to carve out a life as a “tough girl”—a young woman who confronts danger without apology—she slowly developed the strength and resilience the landscape demanded of her.

By turns funny and sobering, bold and tender, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube brilliantly recounts Braverman’s adventures in Norway and Alaska. Settling into her new surroundings, Braverman was often terrified that she would lose control of her dog team and crash her sled, or be attacked by a polar bear, or get lost on the tundra. Above all, she worried that, unlike the other, gutsier people alongside her, she wasn’t cut out for life on the frontier. But no matter how out of place she felt, one thing was clear she was hooked on the North. On the brink of adulthood, Braverman was determined to prove that her fears did not define her—and so she resolved to embrace the wilderness and make it her own.

Assured, honest, and lyrical, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube paints a powerful portrait of self-reliance in the face of extraordinary circumstance. Braverman endures physical exhaustion, survives being buried alive in an ice cave, and drives her dogs through a whiteout blizzard to escape crooked police. Through it all, she grapples with love and violence—navigating a grievous relationship with a fellow musher, and adapting to the expectations of her Norwegian neighbors—as she negotiates the complex demands of being a young woman in a man’s land.

Weaving fast-paced adventure writing and ethnographic journalism with elegantly wrought reflections on identity, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube captures the triumphs and the perils of Braverman’s journey to self-discovery and independence in a landscape that is as beautiful as it is unforgiving.

"I think the New York Times review of this book says it all, "As both a storyteller and a stylist, Braverman is remarkably skilled, with a keen sense of visceral detail...that borders on sublime." I could not put this book down and I have bought several copies for friends. Bold adventure, acute observation, and insights that are universally informative. This is a beautiful book."

Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube Chasing Fear and Finding Home in the Great White North Blair Braverman 9780062311566 Books Reviews

  • I was blown away by this book, and I want to buy copies for all the awesome and brave (or hoping to be brave!) young people I know, female and male. Not that it's a book for younger people - I'm not one! - but Braverman's story, with all of its twists and turns, triumphs and losses, will inspire anyone who is afraid to get out there to get out there. One of the most satisfying and unexpected memoirs I've read in a long time, the prose is a captivating as the stories the author tells, and the far-away worlds she takes the reader to.
  • After learning on Twitter that Braverman is a professional dog-sledder, I thought this was going to be about how she got into that, and her adventures learning and doing that.

While a good deal of the book is indeed about that, the bulk of the book is somewhat of a coming-of-age story about her trips to Norway -- both to Lillehammer as an exchange student, and to small-town far north rural Norway in the Arctic circle. In all of these varying experiences, she grows in awareness and in relationship with certain unlikely characters. I think the highlights of the book are (1) the thrills of dog-sledding and (2) her growing trusted friendship with a small-town shop owner. As these two experiences occur in different locales, the book switches back and forth between them, while also detailing her personal relationship(s) back home in the U.S.

Braverman was blessed to be able to pick up the Norwegian language and to speak it with accentless fluency from her teens onward. Life out on the remotest fjords of far-north arctic-circle Norway is quirky and somewhat backward, if not chauvinistic, but she soon fits right in and becomes part of the rural small-town scene. We are thus treated to a you-are-there viewpoint on these odd lives and stories, and on her life there both as an insider and an outsider. Although the narrative is occasionally repetitive, with the same characters sometimes running in the same grooves (as rural small-towners are often wont to do), by the end of the book the reader is greatly rewarded with a substantial emotional payoff for sticking with the story of this outlandish and unusual place. Do check it out ... and if it veers into unexpected territory, stick with it -- it's worth it.
  • Braverman is an excellent writer, but reading this book reminded me of the scene in Bergman's The Seventh Seal when the knight rides over to a solitary figure in the distance to ask directions, finding instead that the figure is a corpse hanging in a metal cage. When his companion asks what the man said, he shakes his head. When asked if the man refused to say anything, the knight replies that the man was quite eloquent, but his message was bleak!
3/4 through the book, impatient for it to start making sense, I realized that it reminded me quite strongly of Paul Bowles' novel, The Sheltering Sky, another expressive depiction of alienation and existential despair.
Braverman, from a privileged background, keeps inserting herself into hypermasculine, "frozen north" type settings where she is mistreated by a series of louts whose bad behavior runs the gamut of offensive jokes, groping, and unwelcome sexual congress. However, at no time does Braverman object or put any limits on their unwanted behavior, which was totally confusing and inexplicable. It was almost as if she was in a fairytale and a cruel editor, or a demonic anthropology advisor had insisted on her offering herself as a sacrifice, and that she would not get her book deal, or complete her master's thesis, unless she was a passive, accepting audience for atavistic, predatory male behavior. Of course, this is ridiculous, she is not imprisoned in a fairy tale, but I found the content deeply unsatisfying, as her attitude and behavior really was never explained. It was clear that objectionable male behavior is a large part of the book's content, but this had no resolution. It would have made sense if at some point Braverman learns to keep herself out of harm's way, and perhaps an analysis of how our culture, or Norwegian culture, or a combination of family factors, etc. lead to her need for male attention and affirmation, her inability to discriminate between safe people, and dangerous people, and her concurrent powerlessness over her own body.
  • I think the New York Times review of this book says it all, "As both a storyteller and a stylist, Braverman is remarkably skilled, with a keen sense of visceral detail...that borders on sublime." I could not put this book down and I have bought several copies for friends. Bold adventure, acute observation, and insights that are universally informative. This is a beautiful book.

From a preeminent historian of Eastern Europe, the definitive history of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster

On the morning of April 26, 1986, Europe witnessed the worst nuclear disaster in history the explosion of a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine. Dozens died of radiation poisoning, fallout contaminated half the continent, and thousands fell ill.

In Chernobyl, Serhii Plokhy draws on new sources to tell the dramatic stories of the firefighters, scientists, and soldiers who heroically extinguished the nuclear inferno. He lays bare the flaws of the Soviet nuclear industry, tracing the disaster to the authoritarian character of Communist party rule, the regime's control of scientific information, and its emphasis on economic development over all else.

Today, the risk of another Chernobyl looms in the mismanagement of nuclear power in the developing world. A moving and definitive account, Chernobyl is also an urgent call to action.

"I purchased this book because I was interested to learn what I missed. In April 1986 (when the reactor exploded), I was a senior in high school, just weeks short of graduation and thus oblivious to the world. Thorough in his approach, this book explores the disaster from the foundations - back in the 1960's when the Russian nuclear energy program was just getting started in Pripyat. In painstaking and excrutiating detail, he explores the disaster step by step. What I did not expect was the broader perspective he offered on Russian history since then. The author asserts that one of the key reasons for the collapse of the USSR was Chernobyl. Perhaps I am not sufficiently well-read, but that was the first I had encountered that argument. Based on his research and presentation, I find his argument quite compelling."

Chernobyl The History of a Nuclear Catastrophe Audible Audio Edition Serhii Plokhy Ralph Lister Hachette Audio Books Reviews

  • I've read about everything I can find on Chernobyl. I am an environmental engineering professor and I am most interested in the impacts of the explosion. Nuclear engineering is not my specialty but it is easy to understand the problems that caused the explosion. This account covers the explosion, the people involved and the consequences but not in the same detail that others have written, such as G Medevdve or Piers Paul Read. I think the precise details of the event will never be known, but the author is a little kinder to Dyatlov. He does state that most observers at the trial believed he was the most culpable. Certainly Medevdve puts the blame squarely on Dyatlov for a variety of bad decisions. What's different about this book is that it is current and contains information on the later effects the explosion. We American's sometimes think we Ronald Reagan outspent the Soviet Union on star wars weapons, but I think the reality is different. Their economy was bad and because of Chernobyl, people understood that they could not believe their government. "Soviet nuclear reactors are safe - it is only in the capitalist west that profits are more important than safety." If you have not read much on Chernobyl then this book will give you a pretty complete understanding of the issues. If you have read a lot, it will give you a little different view on the events leading up to and just after the explosion, but more importantly, a new perspective on the later impacts of damage of the lies and secrecy of the Soviet system on its final demise.
  • I purchased this book because I was interested to learn what I missed. Based on his research and presentation, I find his argument quite compelling.
  • I returned from a trip to Kiev and a tour of Chernobyl and Pripyat last week. It is so interesting to read this book now! I have been fascinated with the Chernibyl disaster for years (and have a friend that was born in Pripyat) and it was so great to see this book come out recently. I also visited the Chernobyl museum in Kiev and so wish that I had read this book first . At the museum there are photos, identification cards, and other memorabilia from many of the people discussed in this book. I wish I had known at the time who each of these people were. I highly recommend reading this book before going to Kiev if you plan to in the future. I have read many details about the disaster online at a variety of sites and this book is a fabulous collection of everything in one place! Yes, it does have a lot of politics in it, but that is very important to the event.
  • I was astounded that the Chernobyl accident caused the release of //only// 5% of the reactor's core. The full core would have released the radioactivity of 500 Hiroshima bombs. Holy cannoli.

The author also detailed how Chernobyl caused the downfall of the USSR; it was the final straw that broke the Communist Party's back. I found it very interesting that the winter before the disaster, the Party Congress wanted more reactors constructed throughout the Soviet Union in five years--despite the fact that Soviet nuclear scientists understood that the minimum time to build a reactor, from architectural drawings to completion, was seven years.

As a result, the author, a Harvard professor, contextualizes the reactor's explosion--lots of political and personal pressures.

I really got a lot from this book.
  • I liked it a lot. Perhaps because of it's relatively "late arrival" on the scene - it certain takes advantage of the time span between the initial date of the disaster up to the present., that said, however, the author presents the material in a very-easily & readable format for even the relatively uninitiated folks who may not have any prior understanding of what happened and what led up to the disaster occurring in the first place. The author covers all of that and more. An excellent book on the subject - well researched! If you're going to have but one book on the Chernobyl disaster, this one is it!!
  • Outstanding review of what really happened at Chernobyl. This should be required reading for anyone wanting to know about nuclear energy, but more importantly how the soviets handled this disaster. The KGB and leaders let their people down in spite of the sacrifices the Ukraine people and others made to desperately control the radiation and the poisonous effects it had.
  • I have found myself drawn into the story of Chernobyl the last few months and this is the ultimate, authoritative history in my view. Extremely readable. One hesitates to say "enjoyable" anywhere near a tragedy on this scale... but the writing is excellent, both at the level of language and story-telling. I had no idea to what extent Chernobyl isn't just a tragedy of the past, but potentially on an ongoing danger of apocalyptic proportions. And there are other similar potential dangers in the world. I wish these issues were more in the news. Pass this book around.
  • I liked the level of detail when the author dealt with the aftermath of this disaster -- the individuals, the details, etc. The author seemed to have no favorites or "unfavorites" in this accounting. I have read many Chernobyl and other nuclear power misadventure books, and Plokhy's "Chernobyl" filled some gaps in my knowledge of this unfortunate and unnecessary catastrophe.

Highly recommended to those who wish to know more about the Chernobyl nuclear accident, its principals, and other informative details.

THE NATIONAL BESTSELLER

A sensational compilation of the most striking images taken from the Morphia series has been gathered together in a celebration of Kerby Rosanes's talent.

Colormorphia is a selection of Kerby Rosanes's most remarkable artwork, featuring a stunning, full-color sixteen-page section at the beginning of the book that displays some of the most accomplished completed artworks produced by Kerby's fans. These demonstrate the range of approaches colorists can experiment with when coloring. Kerby comments on the styles and the results, describing why they work so well.

The artwork displayed in the color section are included in the black-and-white section of the book, too, giving the reader the opportunity to duplicate the approach should they wish. In addition, there are a variety of images to color featuring the very best from Kerby's Morphia portfolio. These include show-stopping spreads, such as the tiger from Animorphia and the camel from Imagimorphia, among others.

Colormorphia Celebrating Kerby Rosanes Coloring Challenges Kerby Rosanes Books Reviews

  • Just got this book today. I pre-ordered long ago before there was much information about it.
    1) Paper is thick, so blending and shading will be awesome.
    2) The book is a self described compilation of all his best work. The best of the best. So if you have all his other books, then you have the pictures in this book with 2 or 3 exceptions.
    3) The book does include a few double page spreads that geomorphia and fantomorphia did not include. These include the polar bear/ice berg page and the galaxy wolf page. This book contains the double page spread of those.
    4) I have not decided if I am going to return it since I have all his other books including sketchy stories. I will most likely keep it for the 2 or 3 exceptions. I am a huge fan and will definitely pre-order every single time!
  • Received this today, thrown in a box, corner mangled in shipping.
I am on the fence about this book. described this book as having some one sided drawings that could be removed, where are they hidden? Obviously these drawings were taken from his other books, some have been enlarged, put together by the publisher/editors, and sold as something special, NOT!
I am a fan of Kerby's art work, love the overall quality of the paper, and the finished pieces look wonderful. But, something is missing from this book, I can't quite put my finger on it, but it has missed the mark. It almost feels like Kerby was not involved.
  • Fantastic selection of images plus gorgeous coloured in images by fans. It's marvelous just for the colours! Same fantastic paper and details.
  • I don’t know why they took sum awesom coloring pics out of each of his Morphia series but this is what this book is...I think Kerby’s Animorphia, Fantomorphia, Geomorphia, Imagimorphia BOOKS ARE the best of the best...BUY THIS U WONT BE DISAPPOINTED..I OWN ALL HIS BOOKS AND THE UK COPIES both..I always want to know the paper quality and it’s THICK so it’s worthy of ur prismacolor pencils
  • Beautiful book. Examples included of some colored images that are super nice, little intimidating. Highly recommend this book!
  • I love Kerby’s Work but I got this book because it said it was a colored book with his work colored by artists that Kerby respects and you do get 6 ??? But the paper is very difficult to color on , it’s slippery and doesn’t hold color because of the tooth in the paper plus he’s done work back to back so if you use any pens they bleed through to the other side and. I happen to use a mixed media pencils, pens, and watercolor brushes!! I have to pick one over the other! Bummer
  • Thought this would be all new pictures... But no, some where repeats from other books or similar pictures from other
books. Should have removed repeats and similar pictures and charge less for the book.
Probably will not order another one of their books.
  • Excellent illustrations!!! Only bummer, the book is double sided! I would've gladly paid more for one sided illustrations and maybe turn the book so there isn't a seam in the middle of the beautiful illustrations!! Hope someone in the publishing world takes a look at these reviews every so often! The paper is nice an thick, should accept all mediums, we'll see!
